The Kano state government’s demolition program has been deemed illegal, repressive, and unconstitutional by a Federal High Court sitting in Kano state.

The applicants were each given a damage award of N1 million by the court, which was presided over by Justice Simon A. Amobeda.

On Friday, the court ordered the Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA) to repaint the homes that had been previously targeted for demolition.

A Kano resident named Saminu Muhammad previously filed a motion of ex-parte through a lawyer.

After the motion, the court ordered the Kano State government and its representatives to stop demolishing some properties along BUK Road.

The Kano state government was explicitly directed by Justice Amobeda to stop any demolition plans for the applicant’s property, which is located at Nos. 41 and 43 Salanta along BUK Road in Kano.

The Kano State Attorney General, Kano State Solicitor General, Kano State Governor, Kano State Government, and Kano State Bureau for Land Management have all been named as respondents in the lawsuit.

Others are the Inspector-General of Police, Nigeria Police Force, Commissioner of Police, Commandant General of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority.
