Minister of power, others escape death by whiskers as private jet skids off track at Ibadan

Passengers on board a privately-owned plane, including Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, narrowly avoided death on Friday evening when their plane went off the runway and into the woods at Ibadan Airport in Oyo State.

The private plane, HS25B with the call sign 5NAMM, was carrying seven people on the journey, including a minister and three crew members who were unharmed, although the aircraft incurred significant damage.

An official with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) verified the occurrence but stated that the agency has yet to publish a comment on the incident.

The incident occurred about 1921hrs (7:21 pm) local time.

The plane took off from Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport for Ibadan at 1841hrs (6:41pm) and crashed into the jungle near the runway at around 1921hrs local time, with no deaths.

According to an informed source, the pilot in command was cleared of RNAV (Area Navigation, which is instrument flying rules) approach runway 22 when the incident occurred, and all passengers and crew were successfully evacuated.

“Aircraft was airborne Abuja at 1841 and crashed into the bush short of the Runway at about 1921UTC (local time). No fatalities but the aircraft is sustained substantial damage. The pilot was cleared for RNAV approach Runway 22. However, all passengers and crew safely evacuated,” informed source said.

It was also gathered that it took the swift intervention of men of the Oyo State Fire Servicesl, Federal Fire Servicesl, and Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Fire Service to prevent the incident from resulting into major disaster.
