Cross River: Supreme Court upholds gov Otu’s election

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has affirmed Bassey Otu’s election as governor of Cross River State.

The Supreme Court upheld the Court of Appeal’s decision to declare Otu the winner of Cross River State’s governorship election on March 18, 2023.

In November 2023, the appellate court denied the appeal submitted by Sandy Onor, the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate, for lack of merit.

Onor has already faced the same fate in the election petition tribunal on September 26, 2023.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) proclaimed Otu the winner of the polls, having polled a total of 258,619 votes and won in 15 of the state’s 18 local governments to defeat his nearest challenger, Onor, who received 179,636 votes.

News24 Nigeria reports that the apex court had earlier upheld the elections of Kano, Plateau, Ebonyi, Abia, Lagos, Zamfara and Bauchi governors.
