AFCON: Hosts Ivory Coast defeat champions Senegal on penalty shootout
In Yamoussoukro, hosts Ivory Coast overcame defending champion Senegal on penalties after a 1-1 draw after extra time, advancing to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals.
The hosts secured an incredible victory after a miserable group-stage performance that included two defeats, thanks to a penalty kick converted by Franck Kessie, who had scored from the spot four minutes before the end of normal time.
Senegal got off to a fantastic start when Habib Diallo scored in the fourth minute following a ball from Sadio Mane.
