Olumide Akpata, former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has emerged as the Labour Party’s candidate for the September 21, 2024 governorship election.

Akpata received 316 votes to defeat other candidates in the party’s primary election in Benin City, the state capital, on Friday.

Barr. Kenneth Imansuangbon received seven votes, as did Professor Sunday Eromosele. Sergius Ogun received four votes.

Engr. Emechulu Ikecbukwu, the main returning officer for the election and Deputy Governor of Abia state, stated that the party promotes honesty, hard work, and transparency.

While commending the aspirants for their sportsmanship, he advised Akpata to carry others along.

In his acceptance speech, Akpata promised good governance if elected governor.

News24 Nigeria reports that Akpata, who is from Edo South- which boasts of over 50 percent of voters in Edo State , will face Asue Ighodalo, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party and Senator Monday Okpebholo, candidate of the All Progressives Congress, both from Edo Central, in what will be a three horse race for the governorship seat.

Recall that Labour Party won the Edo South Senatorial seats in the 2023 general election and also delivered the state to the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
