Panic as Lassa fever rocks NYSC camp

The emergence of highly pathogenic Lassa fever at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Adamawa State has been confirmed.

The Adamawa State Ministry of Health and Human Services has verified an epidemic of Lassa Fever, SaharaReporters said on Saturday.

The outbreak of the extremely infectious disease was discovered after a corps member tested positive at the Damare National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp.

While confirming the development, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Pharmacist Zirra Mathias Bubanani, stated that “the corps member was confirmed positive following the release of an investigation on a sample taken from her by the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) Abuja when she was suspected to have presented symptoms similar to that of the fever.”

While contact tracing and isolations are underway, the Permanent Secretary urged members of the public to take the appropriate precautions by practicing excellent hygiene and sanitation habits, as well as proper storage of leftover foods and food products, to avoid rat infestation.

He advised the people to report anyone who appears to be experiencing symptoms similar to Lassa fever to local health inspectors.

He further warned the public not to panic, as the ministry, with Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s assistance, is working hard to prevent the disease from spreading in partnership with all state-based health facilities, organizations, and partners.
