Augustine Ojunekwu Avuru, also known as “Austin Avuru,” is chairman of AA Holdings and co-founder and pioneer CEO of Platform Petroleum Limited and Seplat Petroleum Development Company Plc.

Here are some amazing facts you should know about Austin Avuru;

Austin Avuru was born on August 17, 1958, in Abbi, currently known as Ndokwa West Local Government Area in Delta State, Nigeria.


Avuru earned a Geology degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1980 and a post-graduate diploma in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, in 1992.


Avuru was assigned to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for his National Youth Service Corps program in August 1980, where he started his oil and gas career as a Well Site Geologist.

In 1991, he received the NNPC GMD’s Merit Award for what his citation termed as “Exceptional Performance”. Following that honor, Avuru was chosen as part of a cohort of seven to complete a Post Graduate Diploma program at the University of Ibadan, which would prepare them to become Petroleum Engineers.


In 2002, Avuru founded Platform Petroleum Limited and served as managing director until 2010, when he quit to become CEO of Seplat.


He also chaired the technical group that produced the policy plan that became the foundation of the Nigerian Content Act of 2010.

Avuru is a philanthropist and alumnus of Harvard Business School OPM 41; he retired from Seplat on July 31, 2020.
