Adewale Tinubu was born in Lagos, Nigeria, on June 26, 1967, to a legal practitioner.

Tinubu earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Liverpool in England, as well as an MBA and a Master of Laws (LLM) from the London School of Economics.

Tinubu is the nephew of Bola Tinubu, Nigeria’s current president.

Tinubu began his legal career in 1990 as an attorney at his father’s firm, K. O. Tinubu and Co., concentrating in corporate and petroleum law.

He co-founded Ocean and Oil Group in 1994, which was one of the first indigenous trading enterprises to have large operations exporting Nigerian petroleum products.


Forbes magazine dubbed Tinubu “The King of African Oil” and ASKMEN named him one of the world’s top 10 CEOs.

In 2011, Tinubu donated 1.5% of Oando’s pre-tax income to West African education programs.

Tinubu was named ‘African Business Leader of the Year’ by Africa Investor in 2011, and a Global Young Leader by the World Economic Forum in Geneva in 2007, in recognition of his achievements as one of the top executives under the age of 41.

Tinubu has been recognized for his outstanding achievements; in June 2015, Ernst & Young named him ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ West Africa for his contributions to the development of Africa’s oil and gas industry.

In 1992, he joined Allied Energy Resources in Nigeria, a pioneering deepwater operator, where he spent the following ten years as exploration and technical manager.
