Tension in Kano as governor orders arrest of dethroned Emir
Kano is experiencing an uneasy calm as Governor Abba Yusuf has ordered the immediate arrest of the recently dethroned Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero.
According to a statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa, Bayero is accused of creating unrest in the state. The former emir allegedly attempted to re-enter the city covertly two days after his deposition.
The situation escalated when the newly appointed Emir, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, arrived at the palace accompanied by the governor, the deputy governor, the speaker of the State Assembly, and other senior officials around 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2024.
Governor Yusuf, acting as the Chief Security Officer of Kano State, has instructed the Commissioner of Police to arrest Bayero immediately for disrupting public peace and threatening the state’s stability.
