Real reason it’ll be difficult for APC to win Edo, Ondo – Damagum

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has voiced confidence that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will face significant challenges in the upcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states.

Umar Damagum, the PDP’s Acting National Chairman, made these remarks during the inauguration of the PDP National Campaign Councils for the Edo and Ondo elections, held on Thursday in Abuja.

Damagum suggested that the process through which candidates were selected in both states bodes well for PDP’s prospects. He emphasized the party’s determination to secure victory and prevent any electoral malpractices.

Highlighting the achievements of Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, Damagum credited him with laying a strong foundation for PDP’s success in the state.

He warned against attempts to undermine the election, asserting the party’s readiness to defend its mandate.

“We have made significant strides in Edo State, thanks to Governor Obaseki. Our accomplishments there speak for themselves. Anyone aiming to take Edo will face a formidable challenge because we are committed to democracy,” Damagum stated.

Regarding Ondo, Damagum conveyed optimism about the PDP’s chances, encouraging the state’s residents to embrace the election as an opportunity for positive change.

“We recognize our past missteps in Ondo, but the current situation has galvanized our resolve. Our new candidate is exceptionally capable, and his emergence seems divinely guided,” he said.

Damagum urged the campaign councils to prepare for the challenges ahead, remain vigilant, and work tirelessly for the party’s success.

“You must stay alert and proactive. Our opponents will employ various tactics, but we are ready to counter them. We will support you fully in your efforts,” he assured.

The Edo campaign council, comprising 148 members, is led by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa, with Governors Sherrif Oborevwori of Delta and Kefas Agbu of Taraba serving as deputy chairmen. The Ondo campaign council, with 177 members, is chaired by Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun, alongside Deputy Chairmen Governors Dauda Lawal of Zamfara and Caleb Muftwang of Plateau.

Governor Fintiri, representing the campaign councils, reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment and readiness for the elections, emphasizing the party’s strong position in both states.

“We are fully prepared for Edo and will capitalize on Obaseki’s achievements. We have significant political opportunities in both states and will approach this task with utmost seriousness. PDP’s prospects are bright, especially given the substantial voter registration in Edo,” Fintiri remarked.

Chief Tom Ikimi, a prominent PDP figure in Edo, also expressed confidence in the party’s chances, citing Governor Obaseki’s exemplary performance.

“Governor Obaseki has proven himself as one of the nation’s best, notably for introducing a N70,000 minimum wage for workers. Our candidate in Edo, Asue Ighodalo, is well-equipped to transform the state,” Ikimi said.

In Ondo, former PDP National Chairman for the South-West, Dr. Eddy Olafeso, predicted success, noting the unified support behind the PDP candidate, Agboola Ajayi. He emphasized the need for continued backing from party leaders and elected officials.
