2 feared trapped as building collapses in Abuja estate

A significant incident occurred at the Prince and Princess Estate in Abuja’s Gudu District when a duplex under construction collapsed.

The collapse trapped two individuals in a nearby bungalow, but quick action from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMD) saved their lives.

FEMD’s Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, confirmed the successful rescue on Saturday. She emphasized the agency’s commitment to protecting lives and property in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Eyewitnesses reported that the building showed signs of instability before its collapse, prompting workers to leave the site. Unfortunately, the two occupants of the bungalow could not escape the falling debris in time.

FEMD, upon receiving a distress call, quickly mobilized a search and rescue team.

They worked alongside the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the FCT Fire Service to free the trapped individuals. The rescue team had to cut through window bars to reach the victims.

“We are thankful to have rescued both individuals alive,” Isa remarked, highlighting the dedication of the rescue team.

She urged developers to adhere strictly to building codes and to perform integrity tests on buildings before starting any renovations. She also stressed the importance of hiring qualified professionals and ensuring that workers have appropriate safety gear.

Additionally, Isa advised developers to provide insurance coverage for both buildings and workers to enhance site safety.
