Gunmen attack police checkpoint, kill 2 officers

In a tragic incident on Friday evening, assailants fatally shot two police officers and wounded another during an assault on their checkpoint at Opobo Junction along the Aba-Ikot Ekpene Expressway in Abia State.

The officers were conducting their routine evening stop-and-search operation when the attack occurred.

Witnesses reported that a group of six gunmen arrived in a Sienna SUV, causing widespread panic and prompting nearby shop owners and traders at Ehere market to hastily close down for safety.

This incident follows recent violence in the region, including an earlier attack on a military checkpoint by gunmen enforcing a sit-at-home order declared to commemorate Biafra Day.

Authorities have launched investigations into the attack as security teams mobilize to secure the area and restore calm.
