Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2026.
The Dutchman, who was initially appointed in 2022 with a contract set to expire in 2025, has agreed to continue his tenure at Old Trafford for an additional year.
Since joining from Ajax, Ten Hag has led United to two trophies over two years. Reflecting on his time at the club, the 54-year-old expressed satisfaction with their progress but acknowledged the ongoing challenges ahead.
“I am very pleased to have reached an agreement with the club to continue working together,” said Ten Hag. “Looking back at the past two years, we can reflect with pride on two trophies and many examples of progression from where we were when I joined. However, we must also be clear that there is still lots of hard work ahead.”
During Ten Hag’s first season, United finished third in the Premier League and ended their six-year trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup against Newcastle.
However, his second season was more challenging, with United finishing eighth in the league and exiting the Champions League at the group stage. A crucial 2-1 victory against Manchester City in the FA Cup final in May was instrumental in securing his position.
Following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment in December, which saw him take a 27.7% stake in the club, Manchester United underwent a comprehensive review of the team’s performance. Despite exploring potential replacements, the club ultimately decided that Ten Hag was the right person to lead under a newly improved structure.
The club’s board structure has been overhauled, with notable appointments including Jason Wilcox, Omar Berrada, Sir Dave Brailsford, and Dan Ashworth in senior roles.
Sporting director Ashworth emphasized the need for consistent success at the top level, highlighting the strengthened leadership team’s commitment to achieving shared ambitions with Ten Hag.
“This group of players and staff have already shown they are capable of competing and winning at the top level; now we need to do it more consistently,” said Ashworth. “With our strengthened football leadership team now in place, we are looking forward to working hand-in-hand with Erik to achieve our shared ambitions for this football club.”
