The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has experienced an unexpected setback as its official account on X (formerly known as Twitter), boasting a follower count of 2.2 million, has mysteriously disappeared from the platform.
This event unfolded shortly after a group of suspected internet fraudsters issued threats of cyber warfare against the anti-corruption agency. The threats emerged following the EFCC’s intensified efforts to curb online fraud.
Dele Oyewale, the EFCC’s chief spokesman, shed some light on the situation, attributing the account’s disappearance to a network issue. Oyewale reassured the public that the agency’s ICT department has been diligently working to restore the account, a process that has already spanned three days.
“Our ICT department is working on it. They have been on it for almost three days now. We are hoping it will come up again,” Oyewale stated in a conversation with The Gazette.
The unexplained absence of the account has fueled speculation regarding possible sabotage or even sanctions from X, although the root cause remains uncertain.
This incident adds another layer of controversy to the EFCC’s aggressive approach to combating online fraud, an approach that has drawn criticism from rights advocates who accuse the agency of infringing on citizens’ fundamental rights.
