Professor Isa Ali Pantami, the former Nigerian Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, has been appointed as Co-Chairman of the African Scientific Research and Innovation Council (AU-ASRIC) by the African Union (AU).
In this influential role, Pantami will be instrumental in developing Africa’s 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) Policy and Strategy, a framework that will affect all 54 countries on the continent.
Pantami’s appointment highlights his significant contributions to the advancement of the Fourth Industrial Revolution in Africa. During his tenure as Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, he spearheaded the establishment of the National Centre of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) and played a key role in formulating Nigeria’s first Digital Economy Policy, which focused on Digital Society and Emerging Technologies.
Notably, Professor Pantami is the first African to be honored as a Fellow by the Chartered Institute of Information Security in the United Kingdom, underscoring his expertise and leadership in the field.
Joining Pantami as Co-Chair is Professor Anicia Nicola Peter from Namibia. A distinguished researcher in Human-Computer Interaction, Social Media, Gamification, and emerging technologies, Professor Peter previously led Namibia’s 4IR Presidential Task Force and serves as an adjunct Research Professor at the University of Namibia.
The AU-ASRIC council also includes other prominent experts such as Professor Khaleed Ghedira from Tunisia and Professor Maha Grima from Morocco. Together, these leaders are expected to drive the adoption of cutting-edge technologies across Africa, including Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Blockchain, and Cybersecurity.
