President Bola Tinubu has returned to Nigeria following a brief trip to France, arriving in Abuja in the early hours of Friday.
His return marks the beginning of a significant day in Nigeria’s judiciary, as he is scheduled to swear in the successor to the outgoing Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
The National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended Justice Kekere-Ekun, the next most senior justice of the Supreme Court, to assume the position of CJN.
Justice Kekere-Ekun’s distinguished judicial career includes serving as a Senior Magistrate II in the Lagos State Judiciary, a State High Court Judge, and Chairman of the Robbery and Firearms Tribunal in Ikeja.
She was appointed to the Nigerian Courts of Appeal in 2004 and elevated to the Supreme Court in 2013.
President Tinubu’s trip to Paris was his first aboard the newly acquired Airbus A330, which replaces the 19-year-old Boeing B737-700(BBJ) that had been in use since the presidency of Olusegun Obasanjo.
His return to Nigeria underscores the importance of this judicial transition, as the country prepares to welcome a new era under Justice Kekere-Ekun’s leadership.
