Kebbi Gov, Nasiru Idris commits to implementing N70,000 minimum wage

In a recent development, Governor Nasiru Idris of Kebbi State has pledged to implement the new N70,000 minimum wage for state workers.

The governor made this commitment during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to the Government House in Birnin Kebbi on Friday.

Governor Idris addressed the ongoing rumors that his administration might be reluctant to adopt the new wage structure. He reassured workers that the new minimum wage would be implemented once the necessary framework is established.

“The federal government, which approved the wage increase, has yet to begin payment, as the necessary procedures are still being worked out,” Governor Idris stated. “When the time comes, my administration will engage in discussions with the NLC to determine the best approach to implement the new wage.”

He also addressed concerns regarding the state’s deduction of N500 as an annual development levy, explaining that it is a legally permitted practice that dates back to the era of the defunct Sokoto State.

The governor emphasized that this deduction is minimal, totaling only N11 million from workers’ salaries.

During the visit, Comrade Murtala Usman, the Kebbi State NLC Chairman, expressed his appreciation for Governor Idris’s commitment to workers’ welfare, describing him as one of the most worker-friendly leaders in the country.

Governor Idris’s commitment follows closely on the heels of Governor Muhammadu Yahaya of Gombe State, who also recently expressed readiness to pay the new minimum wage, signaling a positive trend for workers in the region.
