The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced the promotion of eight Commissioners of Police (CPs) to the rank of Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIG), along with the elevation of 676 other senior officers to higher ranks.
This significant development was revealed in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja by Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, the Head of Press and Public Relations for the PSC.
The newly promoted AIGs include Benneth Igwe, Suleiman Abdul, Augustina Ogbodo, Stephen Olanrewaju, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, Fayoade Mustapha, Adegboyega Adegboye, and Mohammed Labbo.
In addition to these advancements, 15 Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) were elevated to the rank of CP, and 52 Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs) were promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs).
The PSC also announced that 525 Superintendents of Police (SPs) have been promoted to Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs), while 84 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) have advanced to the rank of SP.
The promotion process for the CPs and DCPs included a rigorous assessment and examination, which is now a mandatory requirement for advancing to higher ranks.
These promotions were decided during the first Plenary Meeting of the commission’s new Board, chaired by Mr. Hashimu Argungu.
In his address, Argungu emphasized the importance of continuous self-improvement for the newly promoted officers, urging them to engage in ongoing learning to meet the challenges of modern policing in the 21st century.
Argungu also stated that, moving forward, all police officers would be required to pass formal examinations before being considered for promotions, aligning with civil service rules that mandate such assessments.
He reiterated that promotions within the police force would be merit-based, ensuring that deserving officers receive timely recognition, provided they meet the necessary criteria.
Congratulating the newly promoted officers, Argungu called for renewed commitment and focus in the fight against insurgency and banditry across the nation.
He underscored the promotions as a call to greater service to the country, highlighting the crucial role these officers play in maintaining national security.
