Edo poll: Why we refused to sign peace accord – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has explained its decision not to sign the National Peace Accord ahead of the upcoming September 21 governorship election, citing concerns over police impartiality.

During the signing event, which saw the participation of chairpersons and candidates from 17 political parties, the PDP’s Chairman, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, were present but refused to sign the accord.

The accord, overseen by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, aims to promote peaceful elections by encouraging political parties to run campaigns free of hate and to accept the results of a fair vote.

Governor Godwin Obaseki had earlier raised serious concerns over what he described as police bias, accusing the law enforcement agency of favoring the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He claimed that at least 10 prominent PDP members were arrested by the police, allegedly to weaken his party’s chances in the election.

Obaseki questioned the credibility of signing a peace agreement when, according to him, the police had already demonstrated partiality in their actions.

Echoing these sentiments, Dr. Aziegbemi argued that it made little sense to participate in the peace accord while PDP members were being detained in Abuja without trial.

He accused the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of bias, calling for the withdrawal of external police forces deployed in Edo State.

“We are fully prepared for this election,” Aziegbemi said, “but we cannot allow a biased IGP to interfere in the outcome. We demand the immediate removal of external policemen who are currently in the state.”

Despite these allegations, IGP Kayode Egbetokun reassured the public that the police would remain neutral and professional throughout the electoral process.

He urged all political parties to promote peace and allow citizens to vote without fear or intimidation.

The refusal of the PDP to sign the Peace Accord has sparked concern, as the agreement is seen as a crucial step in ensuring a fair and violence-free election. General Abubakar emphasized that peaceful elections are essential for the progress and development of Edo State.
