Benue State, located in Nigeria’s North-Central region, has recorded 20 suspected cases of Mpox (formerly known as Monkeypox) since March 2024.
This was confirmed by the State Epidemiologist, Dr. Msuega Asema, who revealed that the cases have been under investigation and monitoring by health authorities.
Dr. Asema noted that the suspected cases were reported from various parts of the state as efforts continue to contain the spread of the virus.
The state’s health officials are closely monitoring the situation and are taking steps to ensure public safety.
He said, “Out of the four confirmed cases, three have been treated and discharged.” He added that the State has only one active case of Monkeypox.
He said, “The four confirmed cases are from Makurdi and Gwer West, while the suspected cases are from five local governments, including Ushongo, Katsina-Ala, Gboko, Makurdi, and Gwer West.

Health experts are urging residents to remain vigilant, maintain hygiene practices, and report any symptoms associated with Mpox, such as fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes, to local health authorities.
