Rivers crisis: Wike talks tough, says I will never support Fubara again in my political career

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has publicly declared that he will no longer support Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, in his political career.

This announcement came during an interview on Politics Today, a popular show on Channels Television, where Wike accused Fubara of spreading falsehoods against him.

Wike, who played a significant role in Fubara’s rise to power, expressed his disappointment over allegations that he was demanding large sums of money, which he claims are untrue.

“I will never support Fubara in my political life again,” Wike stated. He elaborated on the sacrifices he made to unite key stakeholders, including the Ogonis, to support Fubara’s candidacy, only to be later accused of being over-demanding.

The former Rivers governor emphasized the importance of preserving political structures and expressed his dismay at Fubara’s denial of the platform that elevated him to his position. “You rose through somewhere, why do you deny it? It’s unfair,” Wike said, underscoring the significance of loyalty and gratitude in politics.

The fallout between Wike and Fubara has deepened an already tense political climate in Rivers State, where Wike once held the governorship.

Last year, 27 lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), aligning themselves with Wike amidst growing friction with Fubara.

These legislators, led by the Speaker, accused Fubara of withholding funds and even attempted to impeach him before President Bola Tinubu intervened to de-escalate the crisis.

Wike, currently a member of the PDP and serving as FCT Minister in President Tinubu’s APC government, reiterated that his only request to Fubara was not to abandon the people who helped him ascend to power.

“Ingratitude is bad,” Wike remarked, as he reflected on the ongoing tensions between himself and his successor.
