A storey building on Ekhator Street, Ekosodin, Benin City, collapsed during a heavy downpour on Saturday morning, trapping several students from the University of Benin (UNIBEN).
The area, popular for housing students, was thrown into chaos as rescue teams swiftly began efforts to save those trapped.
Eyewitnesses reported that a university rescue team managed to pull several students from the debris, with many suffering severe injuries.
The injured were quickly transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment. However, one student remains trapped under the rubble.
Rescue teams are working relentlessly to locate and extract the victim, who was able to make a phone call from within the collapsed structure, pleading for help.
The UNIBEN Dean of Students is on-site, overseeing rescue operations alongside the university’s team.
As of now, the cause of the collapse and the total number of affected students remain unclear.
Rescue operations are still ongoing, and no official statement has been released by the university regarding the incident.
