As the Edo State governorship election approaches on September 21, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has announced that he will not support Governor Godwin Obaseki in his efforts to secure victory for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In an interview on Politics Today aired on Channels Television, Wike described Obaseki as an ingrate, stating that the governor did not deserve his support.
Wike emphasized that despite his strong backing of Obaseki during the 2020 election, he felt insulted and disrespected by the governor afterward.
“When they came to me, I said I am not going to support you (Obaseki), neither am I going to support anybody,” Wike said. “The one I supported, you never helped anything but rather I was insulted.”

Wike further expressed his refusal to support the PDP’s current governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who has been endorsed by Obaseki.
However, he also ruled out backing the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, citing his loyalty to the PDP, despite being part of the APC-led government under President Bola Tinubu.
The fallout between Wike and Obaseki has been well documented, with the two parting ways after the 2020 election, during which Wike played a key role in Obaseki’s victory.
Wike’s decision has fueled accusations from some within the PDP that he is engaging in anti-party activities by distancing himself from the party’s efforts in the upcoming Edo election.
