New details have emerged regarding the demise of the notorious bandit kingpin, Halilu Sububu, also known as Buzu, whose reign of terror spanned Zamfara State and neighboring areas for years.
Buzu’s criminal activities were brought to a decisive end when Nigerian troops carried out a well-coordinated ambush, killing him and several members of his gang.
Sources confirmed that Buzu and his fighters were intercepted by troops from Operation Hadarin Daji in Kwaren-Kirya village, located along the Mayanchi-Anka road in Zamfara.
The military’s ambush successfully neutralized the infamous bandit leader and multiple fighters from his group.
Eyewitnesses from Mayanchi village reported that the operation resulted in a significant blow to Buzu’s criminal network, with many of his men killed in the attack.

A local source further confirmed that several of Buzu’s fighters were eliminated during the confrontation along the Mayanchi-Mafara road.
“We learnt that the bandits were about to cross a stream when the troops, who laid ambush, descended on them and killed Sububu and his foot soldiers.
“We learnt that only three motorbikes of the bandits escaped the ambush during the encounter. The troops have recovered the weapons and motorbikes of the bandits.
“As I am talking to you, our people are jubilating in Mayanchi and the neighboring villages. We are more than happy today. We sincerely commend the Nigerian troops and we hope they will sustain the tempo until they capture or kill Turji and the rest of the bandits. We are tired of this banditry.”
In Mayanchi and surrounding villages, jubilation erupted as news of Buzu’s demise spread. “We are overjoyed. This is a victory for our people,” a resident said. “We commend the Nigerian troops and hope they continue this momentum until they wipe out every last bandit terrorizing us, including those like Turji.”
Who Was Buzu?
Halilu Sububu, known as Buzu, was not just an ordinary bandit; he was a Niger Republic national who operated a thriving illegal gold mining network in Zamfara’s forests. He had been on the Nigerian military’s radar for months and was declared wanted by the Defence Headquarters in May.
Controlling communities and mining sites around the Sumke forest, Buzu was infamous for his ruthless raids across various parts of Zamfara, including Maradun, Faru, Kaura Namoda, Dubuwa, Gidan Gogi, and Bakura.
A Triumph for the Nigerian Military
In a statement detailing the operation, Group Captain Kabiru Ali, Deputy Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force, confirmed that the ambush was part of an ongoing effort to secure the region and dismantle bandit networks.
“NAF Special Forces of Operation HADARIN DAJI, along with other ground troops, initiated a follow-up mission after encountering hostile elements. During this mission, 38 terrorists were neutralized, and significant weapons, including rocket-propelled grenades, machine guns, and AK-47 rifles, were recovered,” the statement read.
This triumph has sent shockwaves through the ranks of other bandit leaders, with locals expressing hope that the military will intensify its crackdown.
“The message is clear: No bandit is untouchable,” said a local resident. “We trust that with federal support, the troops will soon crush all bandits in the region.”
