Nigerian activist and #RevolutionNow convener, Omoyele Sowore, has been released after being briefly detained by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) upon his arrival at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
His detention was reportedly linked to a watchlist issued by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The incident occurred on Sunday when Sowore arrived in Nigeria from the United States, where he had been staying with his family.
Upon landing at around 9:43 WAT, Immigration officials seized his passport and contacted the DSS for further instructions. After a period of uncertainty, Sowore was released, and his documents were returned.
Sowore confirmed his release, saying, “I have just been released. My passport and everything have been returned to me.”
Supporters from the Take It Back Movement and other activists had gathered at the airport in anticipation of both his arrival and his release, showing solidarity with the activist.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions between Sowore and Nigerian authorities, stemming from his activism and the #RevolutionNow movement, which continues to challenge the political establishment.
