In a surprising turn of events, former governor of Edo State, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, publicly sought forgiveness from Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin, for any wrongs committed during his tenure as governor.
The heartfelt moment unfolded on Saturday during Igbinedion’s 90th birthday celebration in Benin City.
In his goodwill message, Oshiomhole praised the Esama for his remarkable contributions to society and his role as a “good father” who united people from all walks of life, regardless of their political, regional, or religious backgrounds.
He acknowledged that without Igbinedion’s support during his 2007 and 2008 campaigns, he may never have become governor of Edo State.

During the speech, Oshiomhole used the opportunity to confess any wrongdoings, citing his Catholic faith and the importance of seeking atonement.
“As a Catholic, I want to confess that I might have done some things I shouldn’t have done as governor. At 90, it is only right that I ask for your forgiveness for any of my actions that may have irritated you,” he said.
Oshiomhole likened Igbinedion’s widespread influence and large following to a parent with many children, some of whom inevitably cause frustration.
Reflecting humorously on the challenges of parenthood, Oshiomhole remarked, “That is the challenge of having too many children… some are bound to irritate you.” He lightheartedly admitted, “Even me, with six children, sometimes I wonder why they do the things that I do not approve of.”
The former governor concluded by expressing his hope that the Esama had forgiven him, allowing him to reunite with Igbinedion’s son, Lucky Igbinedion, a former Edo State governor.
He also lauded the Esama’s visionary leadership in establishing Nigeria’s first private university and ventures that had brought international recognition to the country.
Oshiomhole’s public apology and acknowledgment of past mistakes was a powerful moment of reconciliation, highlighting his respect for the Esama and his recognition of the elder statesman’s immense influence in Nigeria.
