A Nigerian professor has been arrested by Russian authorities on charges of facilitating illegal migration from Africa through Russia to European Union countries.
The Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia revealed on Thursday that it had dismantled a smuggling network reportedly orchestrated by the academic, whose identity remains undisclosed.
According to The Moscow Times, the individual is a senior lecturer at the People’s Friendship University of Russia (RUDN), specifically within the university’s engineering faculty.
The operation targeted a sophisticated network accused of enabling the unlawful movement of African migrants through Russia en route to EU countries.
The FSB confirmed the arrest of five key figures involved in the smuggling operation, including nationals from Russia, Nigeria, and Ukraine. Authorities claim that the network has generated an estimated $650,000 since 2021, primarily through the issuance of fraudulent Russian visas and residence permits.
The investigation is ongoing as Russian authorities seek to identify further collaborators involved in the illegal scheme.
This high-profile arrest has raised concerns about the growing problem of human trafficking and illegal migration in the region.
