President Bola Tinubu has decided to skip the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, opting instead to focus on pressing domestic issues, particularly the aftermath of the recent devastating floods in Nigeria.
This was confirmed in a statement released on Thursday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
In place of Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation to the global summit. The statement, titled “Vice President Shettima to Lead Nigeria’s Delegation to the 79th United Nations General Assembly,” highlighted the President’s decision to prioritize national concerns.

It reads, “President Bola Tinubu will not attend the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York this year. Therefore, the President has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation.”
This shift in plans comes after Tinubu’s recent trips to China and the United Kingdom, signaling his focus on addressing the challenges currently facing the country.
At UNGA 79, Vice President Shettima will represent Nigeria by delivering the country’s national statement and participating in high-level sideline events and bilateral meetings.
The General Debate, themed “Leaving No One Behind: Acting Together for the Advancement of Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations,” is scheduled to take place from September 24 to 28, 2024.
