In a disturbing incident, two women have been arrested in Lagos for their alleged involvement in the sale and transport of two newborn babies.

The arrest took place at the Berger bus stop, a major entry point into Lagos State, after police patrol officers from the Ojodu Division acted on a tip-off from a concerned citizen.

According to the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the suspects were apprehended while in possession of two baby girls, both around six days old.

The women were reportedly traveling from Abia State to Lagos on September 9, 2024.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the women were on their way to meet a nurse in Lagos, as arranged by the babies’ mother. Upon interrogation, the suspects admitted to being paid N150,000 to transport the infants to Lagos.

They explained that the babies’ mother had sold them due to her inability to care for them.

The case has since been transferred to the Lagos State Police Command’s Gender Unit for further investigation, while the babies are being cared for at a motherless babies’ home. The infants are currently undergoing medical checks to ensure their well-being.

In a statement, the police detailed the actions leading to the arrest: “Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested Ujunwa U and Chinelo I for conspiracy and child sales. The suspects were found with two newborn baby girls while traveling from Abia State on September 9, 2024.

Investigations revealed they were en route to deliver the babies to a nurse in Lagos, who had been arranged by the babies’ mother.”

The suspects have been charged and were arraigned in court on September 19, 2024, as authorities continue to investigate the case in order to apprehend other individuals involved in the illicit scheme.

This incident has raised alarms about the illegal sale of children and trafficking in Nigeria, highlighting the urgent need for more stringent measures to combat such crimes.
