As the governorship election in Edo State approaches, President Bola Tinubu has made a strong appeal for peace and respect for the democratic process.
His message, delivered through a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, comes as political tensions rise ahead of the September 21, 2024 election.
The election will see three major contenders vying for the governorship seat: Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP). With a highly competitive race expected, President Tinubu’s message stressed the importance of maintaining order and civility.
In his statement, President Tinubu urged all political candidates, their parties, and supporters to uphold democratic values, expressing confidence in the ability of Edo voters to make informed decisions. He emphasized that tolerance, peaceful engagement, and respect for electoral rules are critical to the success of the democratic process.
Recognizing the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) role in ensuring a free and fair election, Tinubu called on all stakeholders to cooperate in fostering a peaceful and orderly process. He also commended the candidates for focusing their campaigns on key issues important to Edo residents, such as economic growth and improved quality of life.
In his closing remarks, President Tinubu expressed full confidence in the neutrality and professionalism of security agencies and INEC officials. He urged them to remain impartial, ensuring that the election’s integrity is preserved, and reaffirmed his commitment to a transparent and credible electoral process in Edo State.
With the stage set for a significant electoral contest, President Tinubu’s call for peace highlights the need for all involved to prioritize the democratic process and allow Edo voters to freely choose their next leader.
