The standoff between the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello took a dramatic turn on Wednesday as EFCC operatives surrounded the Kogi State Government Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, attempting to arrest Bello.
Despite their efforts, they were unable to apprehend him, leaving the situation unresolved.
Bello, who had previously claimed compliance with EFCC summons, was reportedly hiding in the lodge during the operation.
However, after several hours of attempts to arrest him, sources revealed that he returned to the Kogi State Government House, where he had been hiding before his trip to Abuja.
Frustration within the EFCC grew as officials expressed their difficulties in detaining the former governor, alleging that he is being protected by his successor, Governor Usman Ododo.
An anonymous EFCC source shared, “If not for the current governor providing him cover, we would have executed the arrest. We are cautious due to Governor Ododo’s immunity.”
This isn’t the first time Bello has evaded capture. The same strategies were reportedly employed, allowing him to escape the EFCC’s grasp once again.
Kogi government insiders have criticized the EFCC’s tactics, asserting that Bello is being unfairly targeted despite his willingness to cooperate.
In April, the EFCC declared Bello wanted for allegedly evading multiple invitations regarding a suspected N80.2 billion money laundering investigation.
Attempts to arrest him have escalated tensions, with previous operations involving armed security forces. During a past incident, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede personally reached out to Bello, offering to facilitate his interrogation at EFCC headquarters, which Bello declined, citing concerns about media scrutiny.
Bello’s media team issued a statement on Wednesday reaffirming his respect for the legal process and emphasizing his cooperation with authorities. They also underscored his intention to clear his name of any allegations.
Meanwhile, the EFCC denied claims that Bello was in their custody and reiterated that he remains a wanted individual.
As the drama unfolds, the EFCC is reportedly reassessing its strategies to secure Bello’s arrest. While details of their next steps remain undisclosed, it is clear that the commission is determined to pursue its investigation into the former governor’s alleged financial misconduct.
The ongoing tension highlights the delicate balance between legal proceedings, political cover, and the determination of the EFCC to bring those accused of financial crimes to justice.
Whether or not Bello will eventually face the commission remains to be seen as the situation continues to evolve.
