Masquerade’s attack claims 2 lives in Enugu

The Enugu State Government has summoned traditional rulers and community leaders in Nsukka following a series of violent incidents involving the notorious ‘Oriokpa’ masqueraders, which recently claimed two lives.

In response to the tragedy, the state has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the activities of the Oriokpa masquerade groups, vowing to hold those responsible for the violence accountable.

This announcement was made by Deacon Okey Ogbodo, the state Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Affairs, during a briefing in Enugu.

The Oriokpa masquerades have been associated with a troubling history of misconduct, including a highly publicized attack on a female nurse in April, which sparked widespread outrage.

On September 19, women from Eha-Alumona in the Nsukka Council Area staged a mass protest against the continued attacks and harassment by the Oriokpa masqueraders.

Hundreds of women took to the streets, demanding an end to the violence and disruption in their community.

Ogbodo confirmed that the state government had received multiple complaints about the disruptive behavior of the Oriokpa masqueraders in various parts of the Nsukka Council Area, leading to chaos, injuries, and now fatalities. The government’s investigation aims to curb the recurring violence and restore peace and order in the affected communities.

“In light of these issues, and following a directive from Gov. Peter Mbah, I invite traditional rulers and Presidents-General of the town unions from the affected communities to meet with me on Friday.

“The meeting will be held in my office at 1 PM sharp. The communities involved are Nguru, Isiakpu, Echara, Nru, Edem-Ezema, Iheagu, Ihe, Owere, and Umuoyo,” Ogbodo stated.

He further emphasized that the governor has instructed the Commissioner of Police to promptly initiate a comprehensive investigation into the incidents, including the reported fatalities linked to the masquerade activities, with the goal of bringing those responsible to justice.

While expressing condolences to the families of the victims, the commissioner stressed that the government would not tolerate any further misconduct from individuals or groups.

“Our people should not have to live in fear. The rights and security of our women, children, youth, and every citizen of Enugu State must be protected at all times.

“Any further misconduct by the Oriokpa masqueraders or any group will face appropriate sanctions from the government,” Ogbodo added.
