The Nigerian Senate has officially commenced the screening process for seven new ministerial nominees, following President Bola Tinubu’s recent cabinet reshuffle.

The nominees were introduced in a letter from Tinubu read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, signifying an effort to address key areas within the administration.

Notable nominees include Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, slated to head the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, and Muhammadu Dingyadi, who is proposed to lead the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

Additionally, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu has been nominated as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, while Dr. Jumoke Oduwole is being considered for the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Development.

Further nominations include Idi Muktar Maiha for Minister of Livestock Development, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Ata as Minister of State for Housing, and Dr. Suwaiba Said Ahmad for Minister of State for Education.

During a Wednesday plenary session, the Senate briefly suspended its standing rules to allow Basheer Lado, the Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, to present the nominees. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele moved the motion, marking a significant step in advancing these appointments.

This cabinet reshuffle comes in the wake of the removal of five ministers: Uju-Ken Ohanenye (Women Affairs), Lola Ade-John (Tourism), Prof. Tahir Mamman (Education), Abdullahi Muhammad Gwarzo (State for Housing and Urban Development), and Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim (Youth Development). With these changes, President Tinubu aims to strengthen the administration’s focus on critical areas such as employment, humanitarian affairs, and foreign relations.

As the screening process unfolds, attention is focused on how these new appointees will contribute to the administration’s goals and address pressing issues facing Nigeria.
