As Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman prepares to present her ninth Union Budget in 2026, attention once again turns not only to the numbers but also to her signature style. Over the years, Sitharaman’s choice of sarees on Budget day has become a tradition in itself; each outfit carefully chosen to celebrate India’s rich handloom heritage while reflecting grace, confidence, and cultural pride. From her debut in 2019 to her most recent appearance in 2025, her sarees have told a story of tradition meeting leadership.

Budget 2026: This year, Nirmala Sitharam chose to drape an elegant magenta-coloured Kanjeevaram saree. It featured a purple and golden border.

Budget 2025: For the 2025 Budget, Sitharaman wore an off‑white Madhubani saree decorated with fish motifs, gifted by Padma Shri awardee Dulari Devi. The motifs symbolised prosperity and good fortune, while the saree itself reflected cultural pride and her support for traditional artisans.

Budget 2024: Her 2024 saree was a blue Tussar silk adorned with Kantha embroidery from West Bengal. This choice highlighted the region’s textile legacy and fine craftsmanship, continuing her tradition of showcasing diverse handlooms.

Budget 2023: In 2023, Sitharaman wore a red silk saree with a black temple border and gold zari work, representing Karnataka’s famous Ilkal weave. Paired with Kasuti embroidery, the saree reflected strength, tradition, and cultural pride.

Budget 2022: Her 2022 choice was a rust‑toned Bomkai saree from Odisha, crafted in the Ganjam district. The attire showcased traditional weaving techniques and sent a strong message of support for local artisans and age‑old craftsmanship.

Budget 2021: During the pandemic recovery phase, Sitharaman wore a striking red and off‑white Pochampally Ikkat silk saree from Telangana. Its geometric designs and vibrant colours celebrated resilience and optimism, while highlighting India’s handloom artistry.

Budget 2020: In 2020, she chose a cheerful yellow silk saree with a green border. The bright yellow stood for optimism and growth, while the green symbolised peace and stability, perfectly echoing the Budget’s focus on strengthening the economy.

Budget 2019: For her first Budget, Sitharaman wore a bright pink Mangalgiri saree with a golden border. Carrying a traditional red bahi khata instead of a briefcase, she made a bold statement that combined heritage with symbolism. The vibrant pink reflected hope and positivity, marking the start of a new chapter.
