Death toll from Jigawa tanker explosion rises to 105, injured count now 70
The death toll from the tragic tanker explosion in Jigawa State has climbed to 105, with the number of injured individuals increasing to 70, as authorities continue to assess the full impact of the disaster.
Initially, 94 lives were reported lost, and 50 others injured after the explosion occurred in Taura Local Government Area. However, recent updates reveal the growing magnitude of the tragedy.
In a statement, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, spokesman for the Jigawa State Police Command, explained that the explosion was caused by petrol leaking from a tanker into a nearby gutter.
Villagers attempting to scoop the fuel unknowingly triggered a flame that led to the catastrophic blast.
Authorities have confirmed the recovery of 105 bodies, while the injured have been rushed to Ringim and Hadejia General Hospitals for urgent medical attention.
The fire was successfully extinguished due to the joint efforts of police officers, firefighters, and local residents.
This incident underscores the critical dangers of fuel spillage and the improper handling of hazardous materials, reminding the public of the severe risks involved.
